Through the garden of ones and zeroes

A survey exhibition at the Grand Egyptian Museum

Detail from Ahmed El Shaer’s VR artwork “Hybrid Spaces and Other Objects”

While algorithms are the product of early Arab and Muslim scholars and polymaths several centuries ago, technology is conceived as a western realm today. This exhibition comes to take a look at how affect is shaped and symbolised within artistic practices in a post Web3 internet age. Between personal narratives, social excursions, magical realism and revisitation of art history, the show unfolds through print, painting, VR, AR, video, and digital illustration. Curated by Adham Hafez, and presenting works by Aya Tarek, Ahmed El Shaer, Omar Houssien, Khaled ElGabry, Mariam Sadik and Dina Jereidini, the exhibition opens February 2nd at the Grand Egyptian Museum, marking the first digital art exhibition ever at the museum.

This survey exhibition is rooted in the practice of six pioneering artists working with performance and digital art today, in Egypt. It presents the museum visitors with a unique chance to travel through works that are personal, mystical, abstract and figurative, all navigating questions of how we articulate our presence and being at this new internet age.
